How to Grow Your Email List with Instagram DMs
Turn Instagram DMs into email subscribers. The lead-magnet-in-DM play, step by step — plus how to export and nurture the list you build.

Your Instagram followers can vanish with an algorithm change; your email list can't. DMs are the fastest way to convert followers into subscribers — here's the play that turns comments into emails on autopilot.
Why DMs beat a plain bio link
A bio link waits for people to click. A DM meets them where they already are — in a conversation you started because they engaged. Capturing the email inside that DM converts far better than hoping they tap a link and fill in a form.
The lead-magnet-in-DM play
- 1Create a lead magnet people want — a template, guide, or checklist.
- 2Post a reel: 'comment GUIDE and I'll DM you the free template'.
- 3Set up a comment-to-DM flow with a lead form that collects their email before the download.
- 4Deliver the freebie in the DM once they've entered their email — send the PDF directly (paid plans) or as a link.
Export and nurture
Export your contacts as CSV — or sync them to Kit, Flodesk, Klaviyo, Zapier or Google Sheets — then send a welcome sequence from your email tool. Because you have the email, you can keep the relationship going long after Instagram's 24-hour DM window closes.
Deliver the freebie only after the email step — but keep the form short. Email plus first name is usually all you need.
Frequently asked questions
How do I grow my email list from Instagram?
Offer a lead magnet via comment-to-DM, and collect the email with a lead form inside the DM before delivering the freebie.
Can I export my Instagram-captured emails?
Yes — Tendrify collects them into Contacts, which you can export as CSV and import into any email tool.
Why capture emails instead of just followers?
You own an email list; you rent your followers. Email lets you reach people directly, regardless of the algorithm or the 24-hour DM window.
